Health Benefits of Tummy Tucks (Abdominoplasty)

Most people who come to our North Toronto office expecting a tummy tuck to be ‘just’ a cosmetic operation, but the benefits are so much greater than just appearances.
1. Exercise and diet are frustrating if they just leave you with more loose skin. A tummy tuck will remove the loose skin and motivate you to continue to improve your health through proper diet and exercise.
2. Exercise is physically uncomfortable if you have loose skin flapping around, and compromised skin hygeine (including rashes and odour) can also make exercise unpleasant.
3. Improved self-esteem helps you to be more assertive in your relationships.
4. Women have expressed resentment of their children for having ‘wrecked’ their figure. Petty or not, restoring your beauty may help make you a better parent.
5. Repair of diastasis rectus may improve core strength and relieve back pain
6. Many women have expressed improvements in stress incontinence (peeing when you sneeze, jump or laugh) and sexual relations
There are many more benefits- hopefully our readers can add to this list!

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

We have many patients who regain their motivation to take care of themselves after the excess skin is gone. It is also much easier to exercise, and hygiene becomes less problematic without loose skin. Thank you for your comment.

I like that you mentioned how the loose skin on your stomach will be removed via a tummy tuck, which will encourage you to maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine. Speaking of, my colleague has been contemplating a tummy tuck surgery because she recently lost a significant amount of weight and is left with excess loose skin that’s affecting her self-confidence and comfort. She’s looking to regain a more contoured and confident appearance after her remarkable weight loss journey.

Pushing a car is much easier when standing on solid ground than when you are standing on ice. Similarly, back muscles don’t need to work as hard if they can work against a solid abdominal wall.

I thought it was interesting that it can improve core strength and relieve back pain. I have been struggling with both of these for a while now. I always thought that tummy tucks were for others, but I can see how it might help me now.

I like how you point out that a tummy tuck surgery is able to give you more confidence to be assertive with others around. My sister has been trying to lose the last of her extra weight from the baby and she has been wondering what she should do. I will be sure to tell her that she should get a tummy tuck surgery since it will also be able to give her more confidence when dealing with others.

Diastasis rectus describes the muscle mal-position that results from the spread of the fascial tissue that keeps the muscles positioned in the abdominal midline. It is a cosmetic and functional problem that is common following pregnancy. Whether fitness/exercise/supplements or the like can prevent or treat this problem has not been well described in the medical literature. Health insurance in the U.S. and Canada does not cover surgery to correct diastasis rectus, but of course there are many problems not covered by insurance. Surgery that involves moving parts like muscles is always more painful. Many practices do fascial plication in all their abdominoplasty patients, but we avoid fascial plication unless the potential benefits justify the procedure.

If diastasis rectus was assessed and diagnosed more readily in the post partum period it could be successfully treated (in some instances) and resolved. However this is still not well known in the medical community and as such the focus is too much on the “cosmetic” side which causes a judgemental attitude in the public eye. That combined with the cost makes it often difficult for women to consider and undergo which is a tragedy. Finally, women are not properly warned of how painful and difficult the postoperative period will be. There are few guidelines, a paucity of support, and I fear of the outcomes.

The best candidates for abdominoplasty are men and women who are in relatively good shape but are bothered by a large fat deposit or loose abdominal skin that won’t respond to diet and exercise. This procedure can dramatically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen and results in a smoother, flatter tummy.
